Year-Round IPM Program Pages
This year-round IPM program covers the major pests of dry bean production fields in California. When available, information is provided for common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), lima beans (Phaseolus lunatus), garbanzo beans or chickpeas (Cicer arietinum), and black-eyed cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata), hitherto referred to as "blackeyes."

What should you be doing during this time?
Monitor for lygus bugs:
- Continue sweep net sampling for lygus bugs.
- Check fields twice weekly at the beginning of pod fill and reduce to once a week as crop reaches physiological maturity.
- Record results (example form PDF).
- Manage if needed according to the Pest Management Guidelines.
Manage pests:
- While sweeping for lygus bugs look for other pests or damage on a weekly basis.
- Manage if needed according to the Pest Management Guidelines.
Survey weeds before harvest.
- Record results (example form PDF).
- Remove nightshade plants by hand roguing to prevent staining of seed, especially lima beans due to their white color.
