Agriculture: Dry Beans Pest Management Guidelines

Planting to Stand Establishment

This year-round IPM program covers the major pests of dry bean production fields in California. When available, information is provided for common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), lima beans (Phaseolus lunatus), garbanzo beans or chickpeas (Cicer arietinum), and black-eyed cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata), hitherto referred to as "blackeyes."

About Planting to Stand Establishment

What should you be doing during this time?

Handle seed very gently using planting techniques that:

  • Avoid internal injury or cracking and splitting of seeds that will affect germination (e.g., never drop bean sacks).
  • Ensure correct planting depth and soil temperatures for rapid seedling emergence and reduced risk of diseases.

(See Production Manuals for more information)

Manage seedling pests:

Manage irrigation to ensure maximum yield and quality and minimum offsite movement of pesticides via leaching or runoff. (See Production Manuals for more information)

Survey weeds four weeks after planting.

  • Record species (example form PDF).
  • Cultivate beans to remove weeds, as necessary.
