Agriculture: Strawberry Pest Management Guidelines

Characteristics of Strawberry Cultivars Commonly Grown in California

Initial susceptibly ratings for cultivars are an essential start to an IPM program. When possible, choose strawberry varieties that are resistant to prevalent pathogens. Other factors that influence cultivar selection can include day length, growing season, fruit characteristics, and plant characteries. Resistance level is dependent on environmental conditions; the more favorable conditions are for growth of the pathogen, the less cultivar resistance can be relied upon. Overreliance on resistance can accelerate new pathogen races that overcome the resistance. Use of resistant cultivars alone does not control the pathogen and other management tools are essential.

Contact strawberry nurseries or your farm advisor for a list of currently available cultivars.
