Ozone Injury

Symptoms and Signs

Ozone symptoms vary depending on the ozone concentration, the bean variety, and environmental conditions. The most common symptom of ozone damage on beans is bronzing, where a purple-brown discoloration develops on the upper surface of the leaves.

Comments on the Disorder

Ozone injury is caused by high levels of ground-level ozone (O3) in the air. Ground-level ozone is a pollutant generated from interactions between components of the atmosphere and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from sources such as motor vehicle exhaust, industrial facilities, gasoline vapors, electrical utilities, pesticides, and other chemical solvents. It is an important component of smog, created under conditions of high temperature and light intensity.
