Follow the relevant seasonal guidelines for pest management when managing young trees. Also include the following practices:
Prevention
- Prevent disease and weeds before planting.
- Plant pathogen-resistant rootstocks.
- Prevent sunburn.
- Exclude invertebrate pests from young trees.
Provide proper cultural care and good growing conditions to improve yield and control pests.
Monitoring
- Monitor and
manage disease.
- Replace seriously diseased young trees and take steps to prevent these problems from reoccurring. For example, when removing trees with avocado root rot, do not replant in the same location unless stock is highly resistant to avocado root rot.
- Survey and control weeds before and after planting.
- Monitor and manage vertebrates, including deer, rabbits, voles (which are pests only when trees are young) coyote, pocket gopher, and ground squirrel.
- Monitor and manage invertebrates, including species that damage only young trees.
- Record results on a young tree monitoring form .
