Agriculture: Almond Pest Management Guidelines

Mummy Nuts

Navel orangeworms (NOW) overwinter in mummy nuts. Sprays should not be needed in orchards where there are 2 or fewer mummy nuts per tree and trees were harvested early. Count mummy nuts by January 15 to allow enough time to reduce the NOW population before bloom, if needed.

To count mummy nuts:

  • Examine 20 trees per block.
  • If an average of 2 or more mummies per tree are found before February 1, remove mummies by shaking or hand poling the entire block.
  • Destroy mummies on the ground by either disking or mowing by March 15.
