2012 Highlights: UC IPM Annual ReportUrban IPM material goes mobileYou see them everywhere, those funny-looking black and white squares that grace magazine ads and articles, Web pages, or even T-shirts and billboards. Now they’re on UC IPM Quick Tip cards to give readers a richer experience of photos, videos, and in-depth pest management information. Initially, UC IPM added the squares—called quick response or QR codes—to five home and garden Quick Tips. When scanned using a QR code reader from a smartphone, the codes lead to Web pages specially formatted for use on small screens. “This was a start in UC IPM’s move toward an improved experience for mobile users,” said Chris Laning, Web/print production supervisor. “It is helping us prepare for the day when UC IPM’s entire Web site will become mobile-friendly.” UC Master Gardeners distribute QR-coded Quick Tip cards through county UC Cooperative Extension offices.
