When should you overseed?
- Your lawn appears to be in good condition, but just a little
thin
- You are growing a warm-season grass that turns brown during the
winter; overseeding with a cool-season grass in the fall ensures
that you will have a green lawn during the winter months
Always determine and solve the cause of your current problem before
beginning repairs, and plan to seed at a time of year appropriate
to the planted turf species.
What should you overseed with?
If your lawn is in relatively good condition in most areas, choose
the seed mix you used in the past or review the following tables
for species that might provide better growth in shady or sunny areas
or areas of high traffic:
- Characteristics of turf
species adapted to summer heat
- Characteristics of turf
species not adapted to hot climates
- Characteristics of turf
species best adapted to most California conditions
If you are overseeding with a cool-season grass in the fall, your
best choices are:
| Annual ryegrass |
Red fescue |
| Kentucky bluegrass |
Rough bluegrass |
| Perennial ryegrass |
Tall fescue |
