Identification
Adult crickets are shiny black or brown, 0.6 - 1 inch long, with long antennae. Crickets are nocturnal and require shelter during the day.
Damage
Crickets occasionally invade gardens, causing damage to vegetables. Normally, they migrate in from weedy areas that are drying up and cause damage only for a short time. Large numbers can destroy several rows of seedlings in a day or two.
Solutions
Crickets are rarely serious enough to require control in gardens. Protective cones or row covers can protect seedlings from damage.
