Beans Lima beans – Phaseolus limensis; Snap beans and dry beans – P. vulgaris; Fava beans – Vicia faba
Family Fabaceae (Legume family)
Plant Description
Beans are annual, warm-season legumes that are grown for their pods (snap beans, green bean) or for the seed itself (fava beans, lima beans). Beans may be bush type varieties which do not require trellising, while pole beans are natural climbers needing support. When planting, consider varieties that are resistant to diseases such as bean mosaic virus, powdery mildew, or rust.
Cultural Tips
Cultural practices such as proper site selection, soil preparation, planting, and watering are important for plant health, pest management and pest reduction when growing beans.
