How to Manage Pests

The UC Guide to Healthy Lawns

Choose your species

Choose the best adapted turf species for your site. When turf species are planted in areas where they are not well adapted, they require greater care and are more susceptible to invasion by pests. When choosing a turf species, consider these factors:

  • Highest and lowest temperatures in your area
  • Amount of shade/sun
  • Amount of traffic/wear at site
  • Water availability
  • Preferred planting method

Determine which turf species will be best for your area by viewing the turf species characteristics tables.
