Rhamnus, Buckthorn, Coffeeberry, Redberry—Rhamnus spp.
Family Rhamnaceae (Buckthorn family)
Plant IdentificationRhamnus spp. are evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees. Leaves are often shiny or glossy. Clusters of flowers are fairly inconspicuous. Pea-sized black or red berries form and are attractive to birds.
Optimum conditions for growthThe buckthorn family of trees and shrubs are generally planted as background plants or hedges. Plants do best in full sun or partial shade. Some species require some shade in very hot areas. Most established plants need little to no water. Some species require regular watering. Prune to shape.
