View Reports

Because the Pesticide Use Summaries are often very large, we have separated the reports for viewing into manageable sizes and provided many ways for you to link to the various parts.

Report Headings

The report heading, both a source of information and a navigational tool, includes:

  • Year and type of report, e.g., 1993 - Statewide
  • Links to information about the database, e.g., Terminology
  • Links to each data section of the report, e.g., when a report is in county/pesticide order, there are links in the report heading to each county name
  • Lists of all sites, pesticides, counties, and months included in the report

Navigating and Buttons

From the report heading, you have navigational links as mentioned above.

From any part of a report, you can link to:

  • All parts of the complete report
  • Each alphabetical break, in the primary sort order, within that part, e.g., "F G J L"
  • The first and last names, in the primary sort order, within that part, e.g., "forage-fodder grasses through legumes"
  • The last part has a link to the grand total

At the bottom of each report, you can link to:

  • Top of Page (link to top of current part)
  • Select New Report (link to top page of View Reports)
  • Report Heading (link to Part 1, the report heading)
  • Previous Part
  • Next Part
  • Last Part

Report Contents and Formatting

Unlike the reports you receive when you retrieve data, the order in which variables are displayed in the reports for viewing has been predetermined. All reports have common features, such as the information displayed at the top of the report, structure, and codes.

Specific formatting conventions are used when multiple subtotals are requested. As the example below shows, vertical lines visually connect the subtotaled item name to the line displaying the subtotal figure, making the report easier to read.

In this example, subtotals were requested for site, pesticide, county, and months in that sort order. Two sites (head lettuce and cotton), two pesticides (methomyl and aromatic petroleum distillates), and two counties (Fresno and Imperial) for January through December were the selection criteria.

Reports with a Customized Format

You can request the summaries in various formats by choosing "Report with a customized format." The associated selections determine whether subtotals for site, pesticide, county, and month are reported and the order in which the subtotals are displayed. Additionally, you can choose to report amount treated and planted, and application method, which will greatly increase your report size and create large files.

As shown below, the options are separated into three blocks, each used to determine your final report format. Make selections in the first block to indicate that you want subtotals of "# apps" and "pounds AI" by site, pesticide, county, and/or month. In the next block, select 1, 2, 3, or 4 for the order that you want the selected subtotals displayed. You must enter an order number for each option that you selected in the first block. Make selections in the third block to generate report totals for "Amount treated and planted" and "Application method" (these selections may greatly increase the size of your report).

Downloading Your Report or Data File

When you retrieve data, your request is submitted to the UC IPM computer for processing, which could take from seconds to hours to complete depending on the size and complexity of your request. When your request is fulfilled, you'll receive e-mail notifying you that your file is available.

Your files will be retained for 7 days from date of completion, then deleted.

All retrieval files are compressed and require a decompression application on your system to decompress them. Examples of decompression applications are PKZip (Windows), WinZip (Windows), and ZipIt (Macintosh). We've provided links from your mailbox Web page (Step 3, below) to sites where you can download these applications.

The files have the filename extension ".zip" and are named in the format "DD- hh:mm:ss"
(where DD=day of month, and hh:mm:ss=hour/minute/second request was submitted).

  1. Use your Web browser to link to http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PUSE/puse1.html
  2. On that Web page, enter your e-mail address in Step 4 and select "Submit."
  3. The Output Retrieval Mailbox page is shown with available filenames and links to sites where you can download a decompression application.
  4. Download a decompression application if you don't have one on your system.
  5. Download your files in one of three ways:
    • Before downloading your data or report file, set up your browser's helper applications to associate the ".zip" file extension with the decompression application. Then, click on a filename on the Output Retrieval Mailbox page to download and decompress the file.
    • Click on a filename on the Output Retrieval Mailbox page, then specify a decompression application to decompress it.
    • Click on a filename on the Output Retrieval Mailbox page and save the file. Then, start a decompression application and open the file to decompress it.

Viewing Your Report File

  • Use a text file viewing application such as DOS EDIT, Windows NOTEPAD, etc.
  • Use a word processing application and change the font to a non-proportional font such as Monaco or Courier.
