How to Manage Pests

The UC Guide to Healthy Lawns

Planting and management tips for buffalograss

Mowing

  • Infrequent mowing is required if minimal levels of fertilizer are provided.
  • In full sun, mow under 1 inch; in moderate shade, mow at 2 inches.
  • In early spring, mow off dormant grass blades to promote spring green-up.

Fertilizing

  • Fertilize with 1 - 2 lbs. nitrogen/1000 sq. ft. per year during the period of active growth (May - September) for minimum maintenance purposes.

Planting

  • Establish buffalograss by seeding, sodding, or with vegetative plugs.
  • Seed at 1.5 - 2 lbs. seed/1000 sq. ft.
  • If sodding, plant in mid-spring to mid-summer.
  • If using plugs, use 2-inch plugs spaced a 1 ft. intervals.

Irrigation

  • Water infrequently.
  • Watering once every 1 - 2 weeks is adequate for most areas of established turf.
  • Little water is required if buffalograss is left unmowed.

Special problems

  • Lacks color intensity (dark green)
  • Very low traffic tolerance
  • Low shade tolerance
  • Invasive
