Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Xylosma—Xylosma congestum
Family Flacourtiaceae (Flacourtia family)

Plant Identification

Xylosmas are often slow-growing, evergreen or deciduous shrubs or trees.  Leaves are shiny, yellowish-green and oval with pointed tips.  New growth is bronze.  Flowers are inconspicuous and not often seen.  Branches arch or droop.  Plants may be spiny.

Optimum conditions for growth

Xylosmas can be grown as hedges or tree.  Some species can be trained up walls or fences.  They do best in areas with full sun or partial shade.  Provide moderate water. They tolerate most soil types and heat.
