Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Saltbush—Atriplex spp.*
Family Chenopodiaceae (Goosefoot family)
Plant IdentificationSaltbushes are evergreen and deciduous shrubs. Foliage is gray or silvery. Leaves may be narrow, round, or toothed. Many species are densely branched and sometimes spiny. In early summer, pinkish or yellowish flower spikes form. Flowers and seeds are attractive to birds.
*Some species of Atriplex are invasive weeds. Other types of plants may be better choices when planting.
Optimum conditions for growthSaltbushes are often grown as hedges. Smaller evergreen types make good ground cover. Saltbushes do best in areas with full sun. They require little or no water. They can take heavy watering but should be planted in areas that drain well. Plants are fire resistant. Older plants become straggly. Prune back old growth to keep plants compact.
