How to Manage Pests
Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Privet—Ligustrum spp.*
Family Oleaceae (Olive family)
Plant IdentificationPrivets are evergreen, semievergreen, or deciduous shrubs and trees. Foliage is often dense and leaves are sometimes glossy or leathery. White or creamy flowers are produced in clusters in late spring or early summer and are attractive to bees. Small blue or blackish berries form following bloom and attract birds.
*Some species of Ligustrum are invasive weeds. Other types of plants may be better choices when planting.
Optimum conditions for growthPrivets are most often planted as hedges. They may also be pruned into formal shapes and grown in tubs or containers. Privets do best in areas where there is full sun or partial shade. They are tolerant of most soil types. Provide regular amounts of water.
