Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Orchid tree, Brazilian butterfly tree—Bauhinia spp.
Family Fabaceae (Pea family)
Plant IdentificationThere are many species of orchid trees. They may be evergreen, semievergreen, or deciduous trees and shrubs. Leaves are divided into twin lobes. Depending on species, flowers can bloom in fall, spring, and summer. Flower color varies and includes maroon, purple, red, orange, rose, pink, and white.
Optimum conditions for growthOrchid trees make good patio trees or street trees. Shrubby species make good potted plants. Orchid trees do well in areas with full sun. Some species require afternoon shade in hot climates. Provide moderate to regular amounts of water. Prune out crowded growth after flowers bloom.
