Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Natal plum—Carissa grandiflora, C. macrocarpa
Family Apocynaceae (Dogbane family)

Plant Identification

Natal plums are fast-growing, rounded evergreen shrubs. Leaves are oval and leathery. There are spines on the branches and on the ends of twigs. White flowers are produced year-round. Red or purple cranberry-like fruit follows.

Optimum conditions for growth

Natal plums are easy to grow and are often planted as screens or hedges. They can also be grown indoors. Plants do best in areas with full sun but can tolerate some shade. Natal plums require little to regular amounts of water.
