Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Larch—Larix spp.
Family Pinaceae (Pine family)
Plant IdentificationLarch is a pyramid-shaped deciduous tree. They have both horizontal branches and drooping branches. Reddish-purple cones are produced along branches in spring and hang on trees through the winter. Leaves are needlelike and turn yellow and orange in the fall before dropping. Larch attracts birds.
Optimum conditions for growthLarch trees are often planted with dark evergreen trees as background or near water for reflection. They do well in areas with cool summers and cool or cold winters. They prefer areas with full sun and need regular watering. They are tolerant of many soil types.
