Katsura tree—Cercidiphyllum japonicum
Family Cercidiphyllaceae (Katsura tree family)
Plant IdentificationThe Katsura tree is a slow-growing deciduous tree. Young trees are pyramidal in shape but may become more rounded as they mature. Trees often have many trunks. New growth is reddish purple. It becomes bluish-green in summer and finally yellowish in the fall. Leaves are paired along branches.
Optimum conditions for growthKatsura trees do well in areas with full sun or light shade. Provide regular amounts of water for best growth. Trees should be sheltered from intense sun and dry winds. Very little pruning is required.
