Plant Identification

Hemlocks are large evergreen trees.  They have needlelike leaves on drooping or horizontal branches.  Leaves are flat and narrow with white marks underneath.  Brown cones hang down from branches. 

Optimum conditions for growth

Hemlock trees are often planted as screens or as hedges.  They do well in areas with full sun or partial shade.  They require some winter chill and summer humidity.  Trees do best in acidic soil, with regular amounts of water, and with protection from hot sun and winds.  Prune to shape trees.
