How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Hebe—Hebe, Veronica spp.
Family Scrophulariaceae (Figwort family)

Plant Identification

Hebe spp. are closely related to Veronica spp. and often sold under that name.  They are attractive fast-growing evergreen shrubs.  Leaves are arranged oppositely along stems.  Spikes or clusters of flowers form in the summer displaying a variety of colors including red, purple, white, lavender-blue, or pink.

Optimum conditions for growth

Hebe spp. are often found in borders, along walkways, or as dividers.  They do best in areas with cool summers and mild winters. They don’t live as long in areas with dry summer heat or winter frosts.  Hebe prefers areas with full sun but needs partial shade in warmer areas.  Water regularly and provide good drainage.  Prune after bloom to keep plants bushy.  Cut plants back severely to rejuvenate old, ragged plants.
