How to Manage Pests
Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Hawthorn—Crataegus spp.*
Family Rosaceae (Rose family)
Plant identification
Hawthorn is a deciduous tree, 15 to 30 feet
tall with thorny branches. Flowers bloom in spring; fruit
occur in summer.
*Some species are invasive weeds. Other types of plants may be better choices when planting.
Optimum conditions for growth
Hawthorn trees grow in several climatic zones,
including coastal areas of Northern California and cold winter
zones of California, Washington, and Oregon. Trees do best
in full sun with moderate water requirements. Avoid excessive
water as it leads to overabundant shoot growth. Thinning
is required to keep the tree open.
