Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Hackberry—Celtis spp.
Family Ulmaceae (Elm family)
Plant Identification
Hackberries are deciduous trees. Leaves often have toothed or scalloped edges and turn yellow in the fall. Trees produce small berrylike fruit that attracts birds.
Optimum conditions for growth
Hackberry trees are often planted as street or lawn trees and can even be planted near buildings or sidewalks. Trees grow best in areas with full sun or partial shade and require moderate amounts of water. They are very tolerant of strong winds, heat, and dry alkaline soils.
