Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Filbert, California Hazel, Hazelnut—Corylus spp.
Family Betulaceae (Birch family)
Plant Identification
Corylus spp. are deciduous shrubs and trees. Leaves are round or oval with toothed margins. Plants have both female and male flowers. Female flowers are inconspicuous. Male flowers are more apparent and develop in long cylindrical clusters. Suckers tend to develop from the base of plants.
Optimum conditions for growth
Filberts do well in areas with full sun or partial shade. Remove suckers and water regularly. Thin branches in late winter as needed.
