How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Escallonia—Escallonia spp.
Family Escalloniaceae (Escallonia family)

Plant Identification

Escallonia are fast-growing evergreen shrubs.  Leaves are glossy and dark green.  Shrubs produce clusters of white, red, or pink flowers that are attractive to bees.

Optimum conditions for growth

Escallonia spp. are good screen plants or hedges and do well in areas of full sun but require partial shade in very hot climates.  They are tolerant of most soils, drought, and coastal conditions and can recover quickly from frost damage.  They do best with regular watering.  Prune taller shrubs each year after bloom by removing one-third of old wood.
