How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Cryptomeria—Cryptomeria japonica
Family Cupressaceae (Cypress family)

Plant Identification

Cryptomeria is a fast-growing, evergreen tree that can grow up to 100 feet tall.  Leaves are bluish green or bright green during the growing season and brownish during cold weather.  Leaves are needlelike.  Trees produce roundish brown cones.

Optimum conditions for growth

Cryptomeria does well in areas with full sun with regular amounts of water.  Prune out some branches to give a tiered appearance.  Large varieties need a lot of growing space.  Dwarf varieties grow well in containers or rock gardens.
