How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Coral tree—Erythrina spp.
Family Fabaceae (Pea family)

Plant Identification

Coral trees are deciduous or nearly evergreen trees and shrubs.  They are thorny with a strong structure.  Leaves are divided into three leaflets.  Flowers are green, yellow, orange, or red.  Pods containing poisonous seeds are formed after the bloom period.

Optimum conditions for growth

Coral trees are grown primarily in Southern California, Arizona, and Hawaii and do well in areas with full sun.  They need moderate amounts of water.  To prevent very rapid growth and breakage of limbs, give little or no water during dry periods and prune after flowering.
