Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Catalpa—Catalpa spp.
Family Bignoniaceae (Bignonia family)
Plant Identification
Catalpas are deciduous trees. Leaves are large and heart-shaped. Trumpet-shaped flowers are produced in clusters. Flowers are white with yellow and light brown stripes or markings and are produced during the late spring and summer. Bean-shaped seeds form after the flowering period.
Optimum conditions for growth
Catalpas do well in areas with full sun or light shade. Plant in areas that are protected from strong winds to avoid wind injury. Catalpas are very heat and cold tolerant and can do well in many soil types. They require moderate to regular amounts of water. Prune to shape the tree when young. Remove lower branches when the tree has reached the desired height.
