Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Cassia, Gold medallion tree, Senna—Cassia spp.
Family Fabaceae (Pea family)
Plant Identification
Cassia spp. are evergreen, semievergreen, or deciduous trees. Many have bright, showy yellow, pink, orange, purplish-red, or white flowers. Leaves are divided into oval-shaped leaflets. Most produce seedpods that fall and can become a litter problem.
Optimum conditions for growth
Cassias are often found growing in parks or as street trees. Cassia spp. prefer areas with full sun. Water requirements vary from very little water to regular amounts of water. Trees need well-drained soil. Prune trees when young and prune as needed after flowering.
