Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Carob—Ceratonia siliqua
Family Fabaceae (Pea family)
Plant Identification
Carob is a dense, bushy evergreen tree or shrub. Leaves are glossy and dark green and divided into round leaflets. Carobs produce small red flowers. Female trees produce dark brown leathery pods, often harvested and made into a chocolate substitute.
Optimum conditions for growth
Carobs are grown as informal or trimmed hedges. If trained as a tree, it will need a lot of space as roots can break sidewalks. Carob trees prefer areas with full sun and only require little to regular amounts of water. Avoid overwatering. They are drought tolerant.
