How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Broom—Cytisus spp.*
Family Fabaceae (Pea family)

Plant Identification

Brooms are evergreen, semievergreen, or deciduous shrubs and grow anywhere from 5 to 15 feet tall depending on the species.  They produce sweet pea-shaped yellow or white flowers.  Leaves may be divided.

*Most species are invasive weeds and are not recommended for planting in California.

Optimum conditions for growth

Brooms do well in areas with full sun and require little or no water.  They tolerate a wide range of conditions such as wind or rocky, infertile soil.  In alkaline soils, fertilize with iron sulfate.  Prune after bloom to reduce seedpod formation.
