Bird of paradise plants are evergreen perennials.  Leaves are long and leathery.  Flowers are fanlike and resemble the heads of tropical birds.  Flowers may be orange, blue, and white.

Bird of paradise are good container plants and often found along swimming pools.  They do well in full sun but require some shade in the hottest climates.  Water regularly and fertilize frequently when plants are young.  Protect from frost.
