How to Manage Pests

Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Beech—Fagus spp.
Family Fagaceae (Beech family)

Plant Identification

Fagus spp. are deciduous trees that can grow up to 90 feet tall.  Most are cone-shaped with wide lower branches that can touch the ground.  Foliage is dark green and turns reddish-brown as fall approaches.

Optimum conditions for growth

Beech trees do well in areas with full sun but can tolerate light shade.  They require moderate to regular amounts of water.  Beech trees do well in most soil types without too much salt.  Trees can be planted close together and trimmed down low to form a hedge.  They can inhibit the growth of lawn or other plants growing beneath them.
