Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
California bay, California bay laurel, Oregon myrtle, pepperwood—Umbellularia californica
Family Lauraceae (Laurel family)
Plant identification
The California bay is a native of coastal areas
and lower elevation of the Sierra Nevada. It is adaptable to many
gardens. An evergreen tree, it grows up to 75 feet tall.
Optimum conditions for growth
California bay grows best in full sun to part shade
and can adapt to several climatic zones. Water is not required
once established. Trees look better and grow faster with adequate
water applied deeply but infrequently.
