Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Andromeda—Pieris spp.
Family Ericaceae (Heath family)
Plant identification
Andromeda is an attractive woodland-type shrub.
Size varies by species; they are mostly small shrubs with varieties
ranging from 1 to 10 feet. Small bell-shaped blooms occur in the
spring.
Optimum conditions for growth
Andromeda plants are wonderful for container plantings.
They grow best in protected areas away from wind and with shade
from the hot afternoon sun. They are easy to grow in climates with
the coldest winters, at high elevations, and coastal areas; more
difficult inland. Regular irrigation is required. Avoid growing
in saline soils.
