How to Manage Pests
Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Wind injury
Strong, persistent wind can cause bark to split or crack and scaffolds to break. If a strong, dry wind persists during the growth period of the foliage, the leaves in the most exposed areas develop small, dark lesions between the veins, twisting and folding the growing leaf. Many of these leaves drop.

Solutions
Although windburn may appear severe, it does not seem to affect the crop. Insect pests and disease can render a tree susceptible to wind damage, weakening scaffolds or rotting the structural wood. Proper pruning and training of young trees and controlling insects and disease will help prevent wind damage. Maintain a good fertilization and irrigation program to avoid deficiencies. Consider wind breaks or planting several trees together to lessen problems in very windy areas.
