Pests in Gardens and Landscapes
Planting walnuts
Plant from bare root during January and early February
as soon as possible after receiving from the nursery.
Do not allow plants to dry out. Walnuts can be difficult
to transplant because of their deep tap root. Plant deep
enough to accommodate the long tap root but no deeper
than it was in the nursery. Be sure to plant in a location
that can accommodate a large tree that has a spread of
40 to 50 feet. The planting hole would typically be
18 to 24 inches wide and 10 to 12 inches deep. Prune
off any broken roots. Do not fertilize or add manures
to the planting hole. |
