Figure

Daily crop evapotranspiration (ETc) of a furrow-irrigated field with clay loam soil. Direct-seeded tomatoes were planted on April 8 with one plant row per bed. The period of rapid canopy growth starts about 40 days after planting for this particular field and continues to about 80 days after planting, reaching a canopy coverage of about 85%. During this stage, the ETc increased from 0.05 inches per day to about 0.33 inches per day, requiring that irrigation be adjusted to reflect this increase in crop water use.
