A simple way to calculate degree-days

Add daily minimum and maximum temperatures and divide by 2 to get the average daily temperature.

74°F + 54°F
2
= 64°F

Subtract the lower threshold temperature (e.g., 53°F for the California red scale) from the average daily temperature. The result is the number of degree-days accumulated that day.

64°F - 53°F = 11°D
