Manage Verticillium Wilt

Verticillium wilt
Symptoms: Leaves wilt and show interveinal yellowing before becoming necrotic. Light to dark-brown vascular discoloration is prominent in the stem and branches. Defoliation and death of plants may occur.

If you have evidence of a Verticillium problem in your field or if you plan to plant a new variety next season with unknown Verticillium tolerance, conduct stem sampling (percent vascular discoloration test), starting when the crop is mature.

If percent discoloration is high or if you would like to determine the length of time for rotation out of cotton to manage Verticillium, consider sampling the Verticillium inoculum (microsclerotia) index levels using soil sampling.

Verticillium-tolerant varieties are an ideal strategy in an IPM program for managing Verticillium. Consider tolerant varieties that are appropriate to your growing conditions. See the Verticillium wilt pest management guideline for cotton for more information.
