Know Your Pest with IPM?s New Weed Identifier

UC IPM has another easy-to-use tool to help home gardeners identify weeds.

Like the insect and disease identifier, this weed identifier is a wheel that you can spin to choose a weed and learn what it looks like, its lifecycle, special features, and least toxic control methods. A dozen weeds are featured such as yellow nutsedge, bermudagrass, and dandelion. The Weed Wheel was developed by Cheryl Wilen, area IPM advisor in Southern California and Scott Parker, San Diego Master Gardener coordinator, with input from the San Diego Master Gardeners.

Information in English is on one side and Spanish on the other. Like the Pest Wheel, the Weed Wheel was developed for the San Diego Healthy Garden – Healthy Home Program. This program educates residents of San Diego County on how to improve water resources by implementing IPM into their gardening practices. As part of this effort, gardening workshops are conducted throughout the county and participants receive one or both wheels.
