Partnership helps reduce chemical use in almonds

The Entomological Foundation presented its Integrated Pest Management Team Award to the California Almond Pest Management Alliance Team at the Entomological Society of America meeting, held shortly after the 2008 UC IPM annual report went to press.

The team developed an insect pest management program that has resulted in substantial reductions of organophosphate use through a combination of biological, cultural, and reduced-risk insecticide alternatives. The apex of the program is the publication Seasonal Guide to Environmentally Responsible Pest Management Practices in Almonds, which uses an easy-to-understand, easy-to-implement seasonal approach to almond pest management.

Team members are Walter Bentley, Central Valley IPM advisor; Barat Bisabri, Dow AgroSciences; Joseph Connell, UC Cooperative Extension, Butte County; Roger Duncan, UC Cooperative Extension, Stanislaus County; Carolyn Pickel, UC Cooperative Extension, Sutter–Yuba counties; Mario Viveros, UC Cooperative Extension, Kern County; and Frank Zalom, entomologist, UC Davis.

Dow AgroSciences sponsors the annual award, which recognizes the successful efforts of a small, collaborative team approach to pest control.
