Tree Fruit Pest Identification and Monitoring Cards
|
These
pocket-size laminated cards are meant to be carried in the field as
handy references for identifying and monitoring major insect and mite pests and several important diseases
in California deciduous fruit and nut trees. Each pest is identified by a description and by close-up photographs
of important life stages. Cards identifying important natural enemies are also included.
The information on these 32 cards will help pest control advisers and growers know how and when to look for
these pests—in both growing and dormant seasons.
References are provided to the appropriate UC IPM Pest Management Guidelines and IPM
Manuals for management information. Text for the cards was written and photos selected by Senior Writer Larry
Strand and UC IPM Advisor Carolyn Pickel. Jack Clark prepared the digital files that were
used for printing. Forty different pests, 23 natural enemies, and 6 diseases are illustrated.

Pests of Landscape Trees and Shrubs, 2nd edition
|
Pests
of Landscape Trees and Shrubs, scheduled for release in January 2004, has been greatly revised and expanded.
This ANR bestseller is an easy-to-use guide to hundreds of insects, mites, weeds, plant diseases, nematodes,
and other plant-care problems that damage trees and shrubs. The second edition includes more than 100 new
photographs, 50 additional line drawings and tables, and 70 major new pest sections.
Dozens of additional landscape plants and their pests are covered in the extensive problem-solving tables
that help users diagnose and manage pests on hundreds of species of trees and shrubs. Featured strategies include
selecting pest-resistant plants, cultural practices to prevent problems and minimize pest damage, efficient
monitoring, and conservation of natural enemies, such as application of selective pesticides when treatment
is warranted.
Pests of Landscape Trees and Shrubs was written by Steve Dreistadt and edited by Mary Louise Flint,
with spectacular color photographs by Jack Kelly Clark. Nearly 100 University of California researchers
and Cooperative Extension specialists and advisors contributed to this essential resource for landscape professionals,
home gardeners, and pest managers. The second edition contains 430 high-quality photographs, 120 line drawings
and tables, and over 400 information-packed pages.

IPM for Walnuts, 3rd edition
|
The
third edition of Integrated Pest Management for Walnuts was
released in September 2003. Like the other books in the University of California's acclaimed IPM manuals series,
this edition includes comprehensive information on each crop pest, including identification tips, monitoring
methods, treatment thresholds, biological controls, and other management methods.
This manual is a complete revision of the second edition and, at 136 pages, is about 40% larger. It contains
215 color photos, 65 more than before, printed in larger format with much improved color. An additional 24
pest problems are discussed and illustrated for a total of more than 90.
The section on codling moth has been completely rewritten to include information on pheromone confusion, release
of the Trichogramma egg parasite, and the new kairomone lure that attracts both male and female moths. The
chapters on vertebrate pests and weed management have been greatly expanded. The revision was written by Larry
L. Strand of UC’s Statewide IPM Program, with input from 30 University and industry specialists.

New downloadable pesticide applicator study manual available
|
Demonstration
and Research Uses of Pesticides, Volume 6 of the UC IPM Program’s Pesticide Application Compendium,
published in August 2003, is a new for-sale downloadable electronic publication available through the ANR
catalog. Every volume in the Pesticide Application Compendium includes
important information and guidelines for different types of pesticide applicators on how to protect human
and environmental health.
Volume 6 is specifically written for anyone in California whose job entails conducting research experiments
involving pesticides or demonstrating how to safely and effectively use restricted-use pesticides. It is also
the recommended study guide for the California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s Qualified Applicator
Certificate (QAC) and Qualified Applicator License (QAL) examinations in the Demonstration
and Research Pest Control category, to be used with the core study manual, The
Safe and Effective Use of Pesticides, 2nd edition (Volume 1 in this series).
Chapters of this 152-page manual cover experimental design strategies for reducing error; interactive teaching
strategies and how to effectively teach adults; laws and regulations regarding the use of experimental pesticide
materials in California; specific ways to protect people and the environment; and calibration for the very
small quantities often involved in research uses of pesticides. The manual includes 48 color photographs and
a large number of helpful drawings, diagrams, sidebars, and tables.
