Spanish Version of Pesticide Safety: A Reference Manual for Private Applicators

The Pesticide Education Program has produced its first Spanish-language study guide for growers taking the Certified Private Applicator examination. This 144-page book, La seguridad en el manejo de pesticidas: manual de referencia para aplicadores privados, is a translation of Pesticide Safety: A Reference Manual for Private Applicators, written by Patrick O'Connor-Marer.

In anticipation of this study guide, the Department of Pesticide Regulation developed a Spanish-language version of the exam. Though applicants are still required to read and understand the English-language label, having explanations of the label and other aspects of applying pesticides translated into Spanish greatly assists Spanish-speaking growers by making it easier for them to prepare for the examination.

New on CD-ROM--Solving Garden and Landscape Problems: A University of California Interactive Guide

A new interactive CD-ROM providing solutions to hundreds of garden problems will be released in early 2000. More than 4,800 photographs help viewers to accurately identify 600 pests and disorders; management screens present clear, usable strategies to manage home garden and landscape pests using the least toxic methods.

Originally prepared to help horticultural advisors and county agents, master gardeners, retail nursery personnel, and others who advise the public, the guide can also be used by gardeners and landscapers to manage their own garden pest problems. Forty different fruits and vegetables and more than 80 ornamental trees and shrubs are covered. For each, the guide helps identify pests and disorders; teach nonchemical control methods; identify natural enemies; eliminate the unnecessary use of pesticides; select pesticides that pose minimal risks to health and the environment; and prevent problems by promoting good plant health.

Mary Louise Flint, Pam Geisel, and Joyce Strand developed the guide, Cheryl Reynolds was editor and programmer, and research and extension staff from University of California, Oregon State University, and Washington State University developed the pest management strategies.

Integrated Pest Management for Stone Fruits

The thirteenth and largest of the IPM manuals, Integrated Pest Management for Stone Fruits, was released in August 1999. This exceptionally well-illustrated book uses over 300 color and 32 black-and-white photographs taken by Jack Kelly Clark to help the reader identify, monitor, and manage pest problems in apricots, cherries, nectarines, peaches, plums, and prunes. Special features of the book are an appendix of color photographs that illustrate bloom stages of each stone fruit and a comprehensive table of damage symptoms that helps the reader identify possible causes of injury. Topics covered include production of certified planting stock; resistance of rootstocks to major diseases; pheromone mating disruption; toxicity of pesticides to natural enemies and honey bees; organically acceptable controls; orchard cover crops; and endangered species restrictions on vertebrate pest control.

This 264-page book assembles the expertise of University of California researchers, Cooperative Extension specialists, farm advisors, and pest control professionals. It was written by Senior Writer Larry Strand.

Integrated Pest Management for Apples and Pears, Second Edition

The second edition of Integrated Pest Management for Apples and Pears was published in September 1999. It includes a completely revised section on codling moth management; a revision of leafroller management; a detailed index; and several other updates, and is an indispensable guide for growers in the western region.

This 232-page manual includes more than 200 outstanding color photographs and 100 black-and-white photos taken by Jack Kelly Clark to help the reader identify more than 100 different pest problems. A special sequence of color photos shows the bloom stages of both apples and pears. Line drawings and tables cover such diverse topics as susceptibility of major apple and pear rootstocks to several disorders; water management; properties of narrow range oils; monitoring forms; codling moth phenology model; comparison of leafrollers; scab and fire blight management; soil fumigation chart; and a survey form for weeds. Publication of the second edition was coordinated by Senior Writer Barbara Ohlendorf with technical input from many University of California specialists.

Safe and Effective Use of Pesticides, Second Edition

Safe and Effective Use of Pesticides, UC IPM's popular reference (originally published in 1988) has undergone a major revision by author Patrick O'Connor-Marer. This comprehensive publication continues to be the recommended study guide for preparing for the California Department of Pesticide Regulation's Pesticide Applicator and Pest Control Adviser examinations. With application to agricultural, structural, landscape maintenance, greenhouse and nursery, right-of-way, forest, aquatic, demonstration and research, public health, and regulatory pesticide use situations, it is an essential reference and study tool.

The second edition of Safe and Effective Use of Pesticides features a completely redesigned, easy-to-use format, including review questions at the end of each chapter similar to those on California Department of Pesticide Regulation's exams; recommended steps in training workers; an explanation of how to comply with pesticide use reporting as required by California law; and a discussion of recent changes to federal and state pesticide laws including the federal Worker Protection Standard.

The Illustrated Guide to Pesticide Safety, Second Edition

The Illustrated Guide to Pesticide Safety was originally published in 1991 to help agricultural employers and other pesticide users train their employees who mix, load, apply, or otherwise handle pesticides. Changes in federal and state regulations made it necessary to update The Illustrated Guide to include new information employers are now required to give to their pesticide-handling employees. This newly revised version contains the information included in the original publication plus all the additional information needed to comply with current pesticide handler training requirements.

By using a comic book format with text in English and Spanish, The Illustrated Guide provides non-Spanish-speaking employers a way to teach their Spanish-speaking workers the basics of pesticide safety.

Two editions of this training manual are available, one for employers or trainers and one for workers or trainees. The employer's edition includes text and illustrations along with supplementary information and instructions on customizing the training for each work setting. The worker's edition contains only the basic text and accompanying illustrations.
