The format for our annual report has changed. Through this new, more compact
format, we hope to highlight some of the many achievements of the UC Statewide
IPM Project while saving money to redirect toward our mission. Research reports
and other items that have been included in previous Annual Reports will be
available on our World Wide Web site. If you have
yet to visit the UC IPM Web site, I invite you to do so. From March through
August of this year alone, over 140,000 different people have visited our site,
making well over a million information requests.
Over the years, UC IPM has helped make UC research available to those who need
it--both on farms and in our cities--through products like its publications and
databases, and outreach efforts of its talented staff. Highlighted in this
Annual Report are a few specific examples of the Project's activities and
interactions with growers, consultants, agencies, and urban audiences. This
report also lists research projects funded for 1998-1999, as well as UC IPM
publications and other educational materials and staff names and locations.

The challenge of managing pests has never been greater. Issues like the Food
Quality Protection Act and the elimination of methyl bromide could profoundly
alter the way pest management is approached in many crop, landscape, and home
situations. At the same time, opportunities for the University of California
and the UC IPM Project to work with those in the private and public sector to
develop practical and long-lasting IPM solutions have never been better. We are
proud of our work, and remain dedicated to our mission.
