Jianlong Bi

New staff join UC IPM

Jianlong Bi, entomology farm advisor for Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz counties, affiliated with UC IPM in May. Bi has conducted research with Nick Toscano and Joe Morse from UC Riverside on integrated management of arthropod pests of strawberries, ecology and management of the glassy-winged sharpshooter on citrus and grapes, mechanisms of host-plant resistance against Pierce’s disease bacterium, and the potential of scale insects from imported fruits to become invasive species on avocado trees in California.

Bi earned his doctorate and master’s degrees from the University of Arkansas, where he conducted research on plant-insect interactions and investigated biochemical and physiological mechanisms of induced resistance in cotton, soybean, and tomato against the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa zea. His undergraduate degree was awarded in pomology from Laiyang Agricultural College, People’s Republic of China.

Since joining UCCE, Bi has started to develop an areawide lygus bug monitoring program on strawberries in the Central Coast and Santa Maria Valley, while in another research project he is testing insecticides against western flower thrips in strawberries.

Michelle Fayard is the new publications editor responsible for coordinating the editorial and production process for the Pest Note and Quick Tip series and other UC IPM publications for print and the Web.

Fayard received her bachelor’s degree in communications from Lyon College, where she specialized in journalism and publication design.

Prior to joining the UC IPM Program, Fayard worked as a public affairs specialist and as a newspaper reporter and copy editor. She has previous writing, editing, and design/production experience with two UC Davis departments, Viticulture & Enology and Environmental Health & Safety.
