The second edition of this publication is a resource for growers preparing for the examination to become "certified private applicators," required before they can purchase, possess, or use restricted-use pesticides according to California pesticide regulations. To become certified, a grower must successfully pass the certified private applicator examination administered by county agricultural commissioner offices. This book has an easy-to-read format that takes you through each of the steps needed to use pesticides safely and responsibly on your farm.

Recommended Study Guide

This publication is the recommended study guide for the California Department of Pesticide Regulation's private applicator certificate examination.

Valuable Tool

This book is a valuable tool for growers, farm supervisors, pesticide handlers, and safety trainers. Topics include:

  • how to use pesticide labels
  • worker protection information
  • mixing pesticides
  • applying pesticides effectively
  • equipment calibration
  • recognizing and avoiding pesticide hazards
  • first aid for pesticide exposure
  • dealing with leaks and spills
  • pesticide fires and other emergencies

Three Convenient Sections

Three convenient sections make understanding pesticide safety a cinch:

  • Farm Profile. Follow each step in the specially designed Farm Profile section to identify the unique conditions of your farm and your crops that will influence how you use pesticides. Use this information when obtaining your restricted-use permit.
  • Pesticide Handling Techniques. Four simple chapters help you understand how to select and safely use pesticides on your farm. Chapter 1 walks you through the maze of information found on pesticide labels. Chapter 2 tells you how to mix and apply pesticides and includes a helpful section that shows you how to calibrate your application equipment. Chapter 3 assists you in recognizing and avoiding pesticide hazards on your farm. Chapter 4 shows you how to safely manage pesticide emergencies. At the end of each chapter are review questions to test your understanding of the material presented.
  • Appendix. The appendix contains a collection of useful information checklists and sample forms specifically included to help you use pesticides on your farm in the safest and most sensible ways possible. This section augments the information presented in the first two sections.
