Pests in Gardens and Landscapes

Onions and Garlic – Allium cepa and A. sativum

Plant Description

Bulb and bunching onions (green onions) and garlic can be grown in home gardens. Varieties of onions are typically grouped by color and flavor. American onions are more pungent and European onions tend to be mild or sweet. The number of daylight hours required to bulb should be considered when planting onions. Garlic requires similar care and can be planted in most parts of California.

Cultural Tips

Cultural practices such as proper site selection, soil preparation, planting, and watering are important for plant health, pest management and pest reduction when growing onion and garlic.
